Coming Glass Works (New York) began using SPC as far back as 1990 as a mean to providing the tools for the operators to determine when the process was out of statistical control and also as a mean to take responsibility for corrective actions. A third objective was to involve their operators as quality inspectors by preventing quality problems through statistical process control (Profiles in Quality, 1991; Kinni, 1996, 202-203). FI has adopted Minitab as the software for data visualization and statistical analysis.
In the final stage the operators should practice how to read the charts and take responsibility for maintaining under control the KPIVs and observe their effect on the KPOVs. It is estimated that still between one and two years will be necessary to reach these goals. 50 65th Conference on Glass Problems An Application of SPC in Fevisa Industrial The following is an excerpt of how SPC is being applied to furnace three, its machines and packing lines and being rapidly extended to all other furnaces and their respective machines and cold ends.
The paper also will show how Emhart Glass has designed a whole new family of inspection machines covering every aspect of finished ware inspection: the Veritas iM performing plug, ring, and dip gauging as well as check inspection and non-contact wall thickness measurement; the Veritas iB performing sealing surface, base, base stress, vision plug, and vision dip inspection; the Veritas iC looking for sidewall defects and sidewall stress, as well as giving information on dimensional measurements, such as body diameter, height, bent neck, and lean.
